Exchanges is an evening program to spark discovery, learning and discussion about the past, present and future of science and medicine.

Join us for “The Problem of Pain,” a short 15 minute talk by author, historian, and TEDx speaker Brandy Schillace, PhD as she shares with us how anesthesia and pain relief changed medicine forever. From laughing gas and chloroform to the targeted therapies of today, the management of pain remains critical to the practice of surgery and also the handling of chronic conditions. Joining Dr. Schillace for this program will be a panel of experts who will help us understand the present and future of pain management -- from the latest therapies to the use of technology to relieve the problem of pain.

Our guest panelists include:

  • Teresa Dews, MD - Division Chair of Pain Management at Hillcrest Hospital, Cleveland Clinic
  • Mike Maczuzak -  President, SmartShape Design
  • Kutaiba Tabbaa, MDDirector, MetroHealth Pain Management Service, The MetroHealth System
  • Jonathan Sakai - Innovation Manager, Cleveland Clinic Innovations
  • Melinda M. Lawrence, MD - Department of Anesthesiology,
