How Picture Books and Wordless Books Promote Literary Development in Young Children

Saturday October 29, 2016

Time: 10:30 am – 3:00 pm          4 hours training

Fee: $75.00 (Materials fee included)    FCC Fee: $60.00 (Promo Code)

The use of picture books in early childhood settings is a resource for many kinds of learning. Participants will learn different ways to share picture books and wordless books with young children and how those experiences promote literacy and literary development. We will look at different kinds of picture books such as narrative, concept, whimsical, poetic and informational; with a focus on wordless books and the special qualities they offer to young children. We will read aloud and engage in various hands-on activities to explore how children learn language and how to implement response activities that support children’s literacy.

Objectives:

  • To explore how children learn about narratives from picture book reading.
  • To understand what children learn about visual sequencing from picture book reading.
  • To discuss what children learn from experiences with wordless picture books.
  • To determine what reading conventions children learn from picture book reading.
  • To recognize what transformative experiences children can have in response to picture book reading.

Suitable for ECE students and early learning child care professionals working with infants/toddlers, pre-school and school age children, ECE instructors and administrators.

Presenter: Dr. Kathryn E. Shoemaker. Dr. Shoemaker holds a B.A. Magna Cum Laude, a Master Degree in Children’s Literature and a PhD in Language & Literacy Education from UBC. Kathryn has illustrated hundreds of educational materials and is the illustrator of over forty books for children, and author of four of her published books. She has broad experience as an art teacher, curriculum specialist, film maker and fund raiser. She currently teaches courses on children’s literature and on how to illustrate children’s books.
