Financial Management - Internal Controls

Presented in regular English for the non-financial manager!

Leaders and board members of congregations and non-profit agencies get to their position as a result of their commitment to the mission of the organization, not because of their knowledge of accounting. Yet a crucial skill for all readers to fully understand and oversee their financial management system.

Many leaders rely on their bookkeeper or accountant to tell them that everything is ok.  This can lead to a number of problems.  To successfully oversee your financial system, you don't have to become a back-up bookkeeper, but you do need to fully understand the structure and process of your system.  There are important checks and balances that need to be part of every financial system and there are early warning signs to help you forecast your cash flow and budget projections.  Developing a simple, but strong system of internal controls is essential to your long term fiscal health.

If no one is watching, your organization can run short of funds before the end of the year.  If no one is watching, it can be easy for mistakes to be missed and money to go missing.  Many leaders are unsure what questions to ask and important questions go unanswered.

This workshop will give you the skills and knowledge you need to establish and maintain good internal controls.  You will learn:

  • simple steps you can take to increase the security of your finances
  • what to look for when reading financial reports
  • how to organize your financial system to make it work for you

Alan Krieger is a former executive director of a small non-profit.  He was mystified by the fiscal system.  His bookkeeper and auditor seemed to speak a foreign language!  Alan went back to graduate school and figured it out!  He’ll share what he learned in simple clear language.
