Difficult But Not Impossible:
DBT and the Value of Social Work
(3 Social Work CE Hours)

Workshop Description:

This workshop will give participants an introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), including conceptualizations of Borderline Personality Disorder and emotion dysregulation, which support Social Work’s values of dignity, worth, and competence.  DBT helps clients lead a “Life Worth Living” through modifying behavior and teaching skills.  Participants will gain an understanding about key components of this evidence based treatment including Biosocial Theory, Dialectics, Modes of Treatment, Assumptions of Skills Training, and Clinical Challenges.  Participants will also be able to identify characteristics of programs that demonstrate fidelity to the treatment model as laid out by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan, creator of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Highlight three ways in which DBT differs from treatment as usual
  • Explain key components of a comprehensive DBT program
  • Understand biosocial theory and the role of validation
  • Identify importance of finding balance through synthesis of opposites (“both/and” versus “either/or”)
  • Learn at least one skill from each skills training module (Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Emotional Regulation)

Target Audience: Behavioral Health Professionals, Social Workers, Clinicians

Teaching Modality: Combination of PowerPoint, Didactic Presentation, Case Examples and Q&A.

Content will include concepts of human behavior in the social environment, principles of clinical social work, psychotherapy, and clinical social work diagnosis.
