Eye Candy: A hands-on approach to growing your own nutrition

Nutrition from foods comes from the many and varied compounds that they contain. Carotenoids, the pigments that give fruits and vegetables their beautiful and bright colors, are one of the most important classes of these nutritious compounds. Join us as we present carotenoid researcher, Elizabeth J. Johnson, Ph.D from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, and Mass Hort's Seed to Table Educator, Hannah Traggis, to learn about the science of these nutrient packed foods and how to grow them for yourself!

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a taste testing of several delicious foods growing in our teaching vegetable garden and are invited to stay for the evening to enjoy Mass Hort's Goddesses in the Garden celebration!

The presentation will begin in the Putnam Building with Dr. Johnson followed by a brief tour of the Gardens at Elm Bank as we make our way to the Vegetable Garden. There, we will talk about the growing conditions and requirements of several Eye Healthy veggies. The presentation will end with the aforementioned tasting where participants can vote for their favorite varieties!

This is a free program and part of Mass Hort's on-going collaboration with the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, bringing you the science and horticultural joy of the vibrant foods we love!
