During the conference, we will be offering a Children's Therapy/Education Session for children with epilepsy, siblings of children with epilepsy and children who have a parent with epilepsy, while the parents are attending the general session.
The Children's Therapy/Education Session will run simultaneously with the conference and is at the same location. The program will be for ages 4-12. The adult:child ratio will be 1:5; however, you may send a caregiver to assist your child if they need one-on-one assistance. Parents will be responsible for their children during lunch. Enrollment limited to first 25 children registered. Additional Studio E paperwork and releases will need to be completed prior to the conference.
The morning therapy session will be Studio E: The Epilepsy Art Therapy Program and will help children work their emotion, anxiety and stress through art. Studio E provides children an opportunity to express emotions through fun and engaging activities. It builds a sense of community and connection, gives a voice to kids with epilepsy and helps kids connect with other kids their age who also experience epilepsy. Studio E is provided by a Board Certified Art Therapist and is a program in partnership with the Epilepsy Foundation of America and Lundbeck.
The afternoon educational session will continue on with Studio E, but in smaller groups, along with music therapy. Music therapy is provided by a Board Certified Music Therapist and is used to help individuals of all ages deal with physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs.
The Iowa Seizure Smart Conference is our annual statewide family & caregiver epilepsy education conference. We welcome all individuals who are interested in the research, treatments and resources related to epilepsy. We will be holding a community resource fair & lunch will be served. As additional details as to the day's agenda become available, we will share them on our website.
EF Iowa is thrilled to have the opportunity to hand out free epilepsy medical ID bracelets/necklaces at the event. We also have a limited amount of funding to reimburse for travel/lodging expenses for those traveling more than 50 miles. Contact the Epilepsy Foundation's Iowa office for additional details on how to apply for travel/lodging reimbursement.
We will also be holding a pre-conference event the evening before the conference. Right there at the Radisson, we'll host a meet & greet including an advocacy roundtable workshop from 5:30-7:00 PM followed by a basic seizure training program from 7:00-7:30 PM. If you are able to join us for the pre-conference, please register here.
