Archbishop Desmond Tutu will be honored as a Champion of Forgiveness by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance and be presented to Desmond Tutu on October 7 in South Africa. Nelson Mandela Gets Posthumous Champion of Forgiveness Award

In 1990, Nelson Mandela was given his freedom after serving 27 years in prison for leading protests against the apartheid government of South Africa. Four years later, he was elected President of South Africa. He kept his country from slipping into a bloody war of revenge and retribution by Mandela emphasizing forgiveness and reconciliation between the country’s racial groups. He created the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and appointed as its head, his friend, Bishop Desmond Tutu, to investigate past human rights abuses. He is held in deep respect within South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Xhosa clan name,Madiba, or as Tata (“Father”), and described as the “Father of the Nation.” Nelson Mandela died in 1999.[...]
