where Mass Hort honors those individuals who
have contributed to excellence in horticulture.
This year's honorees include:
George Robert White Medal of Honor
Peter J. Hatch, Director Emeritus of Gardens and Grounds for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Keynote Speaker
Hatch was responsible for the maintenance, interpretation, and restoration of the 2,400-acre landscape at Monticello from 1977 to 2012. Mr. Hatch managed important restoration projects, such as the eight-acre Vegetable and Fruit Garden, and the Grove, an ornamental forest of eighteen acres. In 1987 Peter initiated the Thomas Jefferson Center for Historic Plants, a unique nursery to preserve historic and Jefferson-related garden plants.
Jackson Dawson Memorial Medal
John Herbert Alexander III, Plant Propagator, has been the plant propagator at the Arnold Arboretum since 1976.
Thomas Roland Medal
Darrell R. Probst, Plant Breeder and epimedium expert of Hubbardston, Massachusetts.
Gold Medals
Karen E. Binder, Executive Director of Blithewold, Inc. since 2004.
Clark W. Bryan, Mass Hort Director of Operations since 2002.
Hollis Perry, Volunteer Extraordinaire for Massachusetts Horticultural Society and member of the Board of Trustees since 2007.
Silver Medals
Edward H. Elliman, botanist and author of Wildflowers of New England.
Jane S. Hirschi founder of CitySprouts, and author of Ripe for Change.
Volante Farms, owned and operated by the Volante family, in Needham, Massachusetts.
