Information Returns
&
Effects of Death, Estates, and Trusts on Form 1040 Preparation

Presented by:
 Dennie Wheeler, CPA

This class qualifies for 6 Hours of CPE

Morning Session:
Information Returns

This session will include a discussion on items such as:

  • What returns, such as Forms 1099 and W-2, are required and when are they due?
  • What serious monetary consequences can befall taxpayers and tax practitioners for not filing, incorrectly filing, or delinquently filing information returns?
  • How can tax practitioners simultaneously protect themselves and their clients from these potentially onerous costs, such as Oregon's full disallowance of deductions for personal service expenses and IRS's penalties of up to $500 per information return?
  • ...and much more.

Afternoon Session:
Effects of Death, Estates, and Trusts on Form 1040 Preparation

This session will include a discussion on items such as:

  • How much income reported under a decedent's social security number on information returns (such as Forms 1099) should be included on his or her final 1040 and how much should be reported by his or her heirs, estate, or trust(s)?
  • How should basis of assets inherited from a decedent be determined?
  • Can community property laws affect basis of inherited assets, even for Oregon, which is not a community property state?
  • How could a tax practitioner end up being potentially liable for about $2,000,000 to heirs of a deceased client?
  • What information should a tax practitioner try to obtain from an individual client who inherits assets, in order to properly prepare the heir's Form 1040?
  • ...and much more!
