Connecting Communication, Schedules, and Literacy

 Presenters:

Julie Durando, Ph.D.

and

Ira Padhye, M.Ed

from

Virginia Project for Children and Young Adults with Deafblindness / Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)

Recent research confirms that learners with multiple disabilities and deaf-blindness, no matter their age, benefit when literacy concepts are built from frequent, meaningful experiences. This presentation will discuss reasons and strategies to connect communication, object schedules, and literacy related experiences to daily routines and regular school activities. Specific attention will be given to students with sensory loss combined with physical challenges and cognitive delays.  Ideas for teachers to use with learners of all ages will be shared with picture and video examples.

*November 4th is for all participants.

*November 5th is for "student-centered teams" only. If you have a team of at least three professionals and one family member that is interested in collaborating with our experts around literacy for a specific student please contact Donna Riccobono at donnaric@umd.edu. Not open to all participants. Please register for November 5 by sending an email to Donna Riccobono. This is a time to work collaboratively with your team and the presenter in creating an enriched literacy program for the student.

Looking forward to seeing you on November 4 - all participants welcome - at JHU / CTE room 218 /219 in Columbia, MD.
