Augmented reality (AR) has entered the public conversation, due in part to the Pokémon Go rage, the new Microsoft HoloLens device, and announcements about coming AR capabilities in sporting events. Major tech companies are making huge investments in this area, and many consider it the next main computing paradigm. Dr. Turk will discuss AR technologies, some recent research at the UCSB Four Eyes Lab, and what we can expect from AR in the short run and the long run. See an example of augmented reality at work, included below this message. Meanwhile, here's a Magic Leap example!
Matthew Turk is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and former chair of the Media Arts and Technology Graduate Program at UC Santa Barbara. He co-directs the Four Eyes Lab, focused on the “four I’s” of imaging, interaction, and innovative interfaces. He has a PhD from the MIT Media Lab and has worked in both industry and academia, joining UCSB from Microsoft Research in 2000. In 2014 he co-founded a startup company that was acquired this past summer. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the IAPR, and the recipient of the 2011-12 Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies.
