A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Approach to Managing Youth Depression
(Approved for 6 SW Contact Hours and 6 CASAC Renewal Hours) 

Issues in Children's Mental Health Series Conference

This workshop will examine the public health problem of depression and provide an introduction and overview of a CBT approach to managing youth depression. 



Learning Objectives

The purpose of this workshop is to train professionals to deliver effective CBT with youth who are depressed.

  1. Participants will gain an understanding of the cognitive model, receive guidance in conducting assessments, and learn about developing case conceptualizations with youth who are depressed. 
  2. Participants will gain knowledge in practical and evidence-informed CBT interventions and treatment techniques to use with youth who are depressed.

Participants will be able to:

  •  Define the cognitive model.
  •  Describe techniques to guide assessments.
  •  Describe the conceptualization of youth who are depressed.
  •  Explain CBT interventions and treatment techniques. 


The Association for Mental Health & Wellness is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0156

Approved for 6 Social Work Continuning Education Hours as well as 6 CASAC Renewal Hours

New York State Office of Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants attend the entire approved educational activity in order to receive continuing education credits, from 9:00am-4:00pm. No partial credit will be given for late arrival or early depature.

Laika D. Aguinaldo, PhD Candidate, LICSW

Laika Aguinaldo is a Ph.D. candidate in the Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University. Her dissertation research focuses on “Rapid Screening of Suicidal Risk with Adolescents in Primary Care,” a validation study of the Ask Suicide-Screening Questions instrument, funded by the Program for Patient Safety and Quality at Boston Children’s Hospital and in partnership with the National Institute of Mental Health.

Ms. Aguinaldo is currently working on three intervention development studies for suicidal adolescents, one of which is a randomized control trial testing the feasibility and effectiveness of a brief motivational interviewing intervention in partnership with Simmons College, Boston Children’s Hospital, funded by the American Foundation on Suicide Prevention.

A licensed independent clinical social worker and an associate for the Daniel Beck Group, the Center for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Ms. Aguinaldo specializes in CBT treatment with children, adolescents, and their families. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Simmons College and Boston University where she teaches clinical courses in assessment and diagnosis, cognitive behavioral therapy, and motivational interviewing. Ms. Aguinaldo completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at California State University, Long Beach where she majored in Social Work.
