About Saint Sophia Camp
In the mid 1950’s Father Homer Demopoulos and the Mr. & Mrs. Club, a dedicated group of parish volunteers, began Saint Sophia Camp to perpetuate our Greek Orthodox faith and traditions for our youth.
Two-week summer camping “vacations” in Malibu, Idyllwild and on Catalina Island where camping activities and camaraderie coupled with prayer and religious education of our forefathers’ faith instilled in our youth.
With the purchase of a 68 acre permanent campsite in the San Bernardino National Forest, camp became a viable ministry of our Orthodox faith in Southern California and a community tradition.
Sadly, as a result of the tragic mudslide on Christmas Eve 2003, the physical location remains closed permanently. The Camp, however, continues as it began, with two-week summer camping programs at a rented facility in the forest above our beloved closed campsite.
Our Camp has found its greatest reality on the intangible and emotional levels. Those who worked for and attended camp have benefited – they have been blessed with wonderful memories, lifelong friendships and marriages. These are the realities of a community’s dreams and our faith being perpetuated in today’s youth.
Today the Camp Committee consists of members from several Southland Parishes. A sub-committee has sponsored this Golf Tournament since it began in 1964, to support and maintain the camping program – which includes the high cost of renting a facility.
If you are unable to join us, you can show your support by making a donation. Please review the sponsorship options for one of the many ways you can support the Saint Sophia Cathedral Camp Program.
Vision Statement:
"Keeping the camp tradition alive for our children since 1964."
Please support our church camp by donating to/participating in our annual golf tournament.
