Compatibility and Stability: Storing Today's Fuels
Wayne Geyer, Executive Vice-President
STI/SPFA

In the past decade, clean air regulatory efforts have resulted in more changes to today’s motor vehicle fuels than ever before.  Ethanol and biodiesel are blended with gasoline and diesel in higher concentrations.  Sulfur has been removed from diesel, while DEF is added to exhaust.  Numerous fuel additives are mixed in downstream after departing the refinery for many different purposes.  The fuels can no longer tolerate water, even in minute quantities, without significant impact on fuel quality.  The issues from the 1980’s concerning external corrosion of steel and structural failure of non-metallic tanks have been replaced with concerns about compatibility and internal corrosion. Critical components to prevent spills -- such as overfill prevention devices, submersible turbine pumps, leak detection, electronic gauging sensors, meters, shear valves, ball float valves -- have been made more vulnerable …and inside the tank.  While the quality of the fuel can more easily be compromised today, the newer engines in today’s vehicles demand cleaner fuels than ever.

Fuels, Payments and Techs: Today and Tomorrow
Rick Long, In-coming Executive Vice President & General Counsel

Petroleum Equipment Institute

The equipment used to store, meter and dispense fuel has come a long way since 1951 when the Petroleum Equipment Institute (PEI) was founded. But the association’s commitment to the distributors and contractors who sell, install and service that equipment remains as strong as ever. Today, PEI is helping the industry address a dizzying array of challenging questions. What does the future hold for mid- and high-level ethanol fuel blends? Can we expect electric vehicles or vehicles powered by other alternative fuels to gain a strong foothold in the market—and if so, what does that mean for the industry? How are payment technologies like EMV and mobile-pay likely to impact contractors’ businesses in the next few years? And how in the world can the industry find enough service technicians to handle the growing volume of work that needs to be done? This presentation looks at today’s biggest questions—with an eye toward the future.
