Juror:  Carla Steckley

Carla Steckley, our judge for the annual ArtSpace Herndon photography exhibit, has been a serious photographer since the late 80’s. She remembers the traditional wet darkroom in her home, where she produced Illfochrome and black and white images. Her specialty was Infrared Photography, leading to numerous lectures on the subject and writing a book about the process. She now happily embraces the benefits of the digital world.

Her background includes a degree from the New York Institute of Photography, courses from Northern Va. Community College and workshops from well respected photographers.

Carla’s distinctive images have won her numerous awards. For over 7 years she competed at the Northern VA. Photo Society and Vienna Photo Society where she was named “Photographer of the Year” 22 times for her work in the categories of black and white, color prints and slides. 94 of those awards were first place winners. She was very proud of her Best of Show out of 725 entries from the Meadowlark Photo Expo in 2006. Also to see her photo “Potomac Tributary” hanging in the Smithsonian in 2004 was another achievement that brought satisfaction.

She now has turned her attention to exhibiting, most recently having a show at Glenview Mansion in Rockville “Reverence for Trees”.  She’s shown her work, often in one and two person shows, at Brookside Gardens, the Barry Gallery at Marymount University, the Jo Ann Rose Gallery for the LRA, Washington Cathedral, the Art League in Alexandria and the Artist’s Undertaking in Occoquan.

She’s been the judge for ArtSpace Herndon’s annual photo exhibit as well as other organizations such as the League of Reston Artists, Great Falls Studio, and the North Bethesda Camera Club.
