Augustin-Jean Fresnel (10 May 1788 – 14 July 1827), was a French engineer and physicist and is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Fresnel lens, first adopted in lighthouses while he was a French commissioner of lighthouses, and found in many applications today. He contributed significantly to the establishment of the theory of wave optics and studied the behavior of light both theoretically and experimentally.
Mr. Joseph Smith, performing artist of living history, will present two shows as Augustin Fresnel on December 10th at 12:00pm and 2:00pm and one show on Sunday, December 11th at 2:00pm. Admission is $10 for guests and free for members.
This program, Seeing Staten Island's Lights Through A New Lens: Augustin Fresnel, is made possible (in part) by a DCA Art Fund Grant from Staten Island Arts, with public funding from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
The National Lighthouse Museum gift shop will also be open featuring lighthouse and maritime gifts perfect for the holidays.
