INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING LEVEL 1 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

But if you’re keen, you can email Marisol Pena at UFT (mpena@uft.org) and let her know that you would have liked to attend the PD with your colleagues. We are hoping to continue our partnership with UFT so we can continue to host PDs, and an email expressing interest will help us do that. I will also add you to our email list so that you will be the first to know about our upcoming events.

This 4.5-Hour Professional Development is offered through a collaboration between the CUNY Creative Arts Team and the United Federation of Teachers through the generous underwriting of the New York City Council and is offered at no cost.

When:
Thursday, March 16/2017

8:30am - 2pm

Where:
Queens Borough Office, UFT
97-77 Queens Boulevard
Rego Park, NY 11374

All participants will receive a CUNY Certificate of Attendance.

DESCRIPTION: During this workshop, participants will explore how interactive storytelling is key in developing children's  listening, speaking, and language skills as outlined in the Common Core Standards.

ELTA Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts

CAT facilitators will demonstrate three forms of oral storytelling: reading a storybook, telling a story based on a book, and storytelling that engages an audience both physically and verbally - drawing specific links to how each form impacts a child's literacy skills.

CAT will then mentor the teachers as they develop, practice, and refine an interactive storytelling of  their own based on one of two picture books.

Particular attention will be paid  to strengthening each teacher’s storytelling skills and identifying  how specific techniques of audience participation support early  childhood literacy and English acquisition.

Thoughout the process, teachers  will be asked to reflect on what they have led, give and receive  constructive criticism, and discuss future applications. The overarching  goals throughout are to help the teachers work in a student-centered  manner, explore how to encourage and  incorporate student’s responses, and tap into their own creativity.
