Don't miss this chance to see

Jim Knipe, PhD. Presenting:

EMDR Toolbox: AIP Methods for Treating Adult Clients with Complex PTSD & Dissociative Personality Structure

San Diego, CA.   November 3-4, 2017

Co-sponsored by Susan Brown, LCSW, BCD            and Ce-Classes

13  EMDRIA & Academic CEUs

Treating Complex Trauma and Dissociation in your practice?

Need more specialized "Tools" to work with highly challenging clients where therapy stalls or freezes?

This is a not-to-be-missed workshop by one of EMDR therapy's Master Clinicians who has been an invited presenter world-wide.

This is a course for therapists who are trained and experienced in using EMDR therapy but who may sometimes be stymied about how to structure therapy sessions for those clients with more complex emotional conditions. Specialized, novel EMDR-related "Tools" -- conceptual models and specific therapy interventions -- can significantly extend the therapeutic power of EMDR to many individuals who have suffered early, complex, and prolonged abuse and/or neglect. These "Tools" supplement -- but do not replace -- what has already been proven effective in the use of EMDR therapy for the treatment of trauma. The goals of the workshop include developing an overview of an Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model for treating Complex PTSD and other dissociative conditions and acquiring specialized EMDR therapeutic approaches to better resolve the psychological "knots" and "tangles" that impede progress.

What previous workshop participants say about training with Jim Knipe:

"Jim Knipe is one of EMDR therapy's gems. He has developed a unique body of work for the treatment of complex trauma and dissocation. He presents his material in such a user-friendly way, it is astonishing how immediately these "Tools" can be utilized in practice. A not-to-be-missed workshop for all trauma clinicians."

"I learned practical, straightforward tools, grounded solidly in AIP and EMDR therapy, which increased my effectiveness with clients presenting with more complex psychological and behavioral conditions. Jim is a brilliant presenter!"

"Jim is a pioneer of creative applications of EMDR therapy for some of our most complex and challenging clients. He teaches a gentle, fractionated approach with sound clinical and research underpinnings, in a style full of warmth and dedication. It doesn't get much better."

Through lecture, discussion, and extensive video, participants in this workshop will be able to:

  • Identify 3 conceptually different types of damage to personality development that can occur as a result of difficult childhood experiences.
  • Describe several different ways of targeting and resolving avoidance defenses, idealization defenses, and shame defenses as well as how these targeting methods may be modified for clients with dissociative personality structure.
  •  Learn and utilize the "Back-of-the-Head Scale (BHS) and the wide variety of applications of the Constant Installation of Present Orientation and Safety (CIPOS) method.

Additional Program Details Include:

  • Working with ego states within an AIP approach including a theoretical overview of EMDR-based model of dissociation and how it relates to the Theory of Structural Dissociation of the Personality (van der Hart et al. 2006) and the Internal Family Systems model (Schwartz 1995).
  • Describing the connections between shame-based depression and the problem of "attachment to the perpetrator," as well as applying specific approaches to AIP targeting of dysfunctional attachments.
  • Describing and utilizing the "Loving Eyes" method, an alternative to the EMDR Assessment Phase (EMDR Phase 3).
  • Targeting procrastination and other avoidance defenses with AIP methods, with both dissociative and non-dissociative clients.
  • Using avoidance as a resource to enhance processing.
  • Prevention of dissociative abreaction while accessing traumatic memories.
  • Addressing dissociative symptoms during reprocessing phases of EMDR.
  • Phase 3 assessment questions obtained from different ego states.
