The  Center for Autism Research (CAR) is a collaborative research center between The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania. CAR's primary mission is to understand the causes of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and develop effective treatments through research with infants through adults. Families who participate receive comprehensive assessment reports and are paid for their time and some travel expenses. CAR is also committed to serving the needs of families living with ASD through education and guidance. The new CAR Autism Roadmap seeks to help families answer questions about life with autism, whether they are new to the diagnosis or have lived with it for years, as well as connect them with resources in their communities via the CAR Resource Directory.

Next Steps Into Adolescence Workshop

-A workshop for family members and professionals supporting children with an  autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis who are approaching adolescence-

As children approach and enter the teen years, they must deal with physical growth spurts, mindboggling   hormone releases, and ever-changing and challenging social relationships. Children begin to care about being “cool,” and classmates may no longer be as tolerant of “differences”. For pre-adolescent children with ASD, these already complicated physical and social changes are compounded by the typical ASD difficulties of reading social cues and understanding the behaviors of others. Consequently, children with ASD approaching adolescence have greater transition needs than most typically developing pre-teens.

Parents of pre-adolescent children also need support. By the end of elementary school, parents begin to look toward the future. They begin to think about what their children will be when they “grow-up” and worry if their children will ever “catch-up” academically and socially. Other concerns arise from the facts we know – preadolescence is a time children can develop seizures, have greater trouble sleeping, and are faced with greater academic demands at school. All in all, the transition into adolescence can be a difficult one and a time when many families recognize the life-long planning associated with ASD.
