Accounting and Finance Basics for Entrepreneurs 

How well do you understand the income and expenses of your business and are you using your financial statements to manage your business? Have you set up financial goals and are you comparing them to actual results to see how well you are forecasting the direction your business is heading? Are you protecting your assets?

It’s not possible to operate your business without the ability to account for dollars received and dollars spent. 

In this seminar you will learn:

  • How to understand your financial statements
  • How to use accounting systems and internal controls

Facilitator and Instructor:

Alan Fishman
Business consultant providing financial, tax and operational advice to businesses of all types and sizes. Developing business plans and entity structure is an area of high interest and involvement. 

Past and current industry experience includes medical services, wholesale food distribution, professional services (architectural and engineering firms), restaurants (single and multi-unit full service, fast food and franchised stores), real estate (residential and commercial rental), ad-specialty promotions and manufacturing.

Instructor -- How to Prepare a Budget:
Bernadette H. Schopfer
Bernadette H. Schopfer manages every aspect of the tax department, from oversight of all services provided to the clients to ensuring that each member of the tax team is trained and up-to-date on the ever-changing federal, state and local tax codes. She serves as a business advisor for all of her clients' tax needs, including Income Tax Planning and Income Tax Return Preparation, Business and Personal Financial Planning, Business Succession and Retirement Planning, Estate and Gift Tax Planning, Tax Conflict Resolution, as well as Eldercare.

Bernadette joined M Group in 1995. For the past 15 years she’s specialized in understanding the increasing complexity of the tax laws, and translating them into ordinary, every day language for her clients. Bernadette has earned the trust and confidence of her clients by staying on top of the nuances of the tax codes, understanding how these requirements impact each client's business or personal situation, and helping them file returns with the maximum savings. Bernadette takes the time to understand her clients' financial needs, in order to properly assess all of their tax obligations.

Bernadette, a Certified Public Accountant, brings more than 20 years of tax and accounting experience to M Group. Prior to joining M Group, Bernadette spent six years at the Big 4 accounting firm of Ernst & Young LLP, where she received her first experience in the tax field. She was promoted to the position of tax manager in Ernst & Young LLP's Entrepreneurial Services Practice.

Bernadette is a graduate of Siena College, and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Accounting. She received a Masters of Science in Taxation from Pace University. Bernadette is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants’ Estate Planning Committee.

Instructor -- Understanding Financial Statements:
Robert Moses
Robert Moses has worked as a CPA for 35 years, finishing his career as head of corporate taxes at Sony Corporation, specializing in domestic and international tax planning. Bob’s career included Price Waterhouse and being head of  tax departments in the oil and gas sectors as well as the entertainment industry, including Columbia Pictures. As a SCORE NYC Mentor, he has specialized in writing business plans and obtaining small business financing for small businesses. He has also given accounting and finance seminars for SCORE and for the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA). He holds a BS degree from Union College and an MBA from Baruch College.

Adam Baruch
In 2010 Adam Baruch, C.P.A., co-founded with Lawrence Melzer Melzer and Associates, CPAs, P.C., a public accounting firm that performs attest and taxation in a variety of industries, with a specialty in the real estate and garment sectors. Adam is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and incoming chairman of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants Small Business Outreach Committee  He earned an MBA in Accounting at Baruch College/CUNY.
