EDP 2-Part WORKSHOP Series:

"Introduction to Qualitative Research Methods for Medical Education"

Part 2

David Schlundt, PhD
Associate Professor of Psychology

Vanderbilt University

Introduction to Qualitative Research Objectives - Part 2:
  • Describe best practices for obtaining high quality digital recordings of your focus group or recordings.
  • Know how to appropriately handle digital recordings.
  • Articulate how to insure that your data is de-identified.
  • Know the option for obtaining transcripts.
  • Describe the steps involved in developing and refining the coding system.
  • Be able to list the options available for coding transcripts and managing the coded data.
  • Describe the steps involved in sorting and analyzing coded transcripts.
  • Appreciate the importance of building a theoretical model that integrates the themes identified in the coded transcripts.
  • Understand the strategies used to create a report or publication.
  • Discuss the options for disseminating your results.

Engagement Activities:

  • Small group activity involving a focus group moderator’s guide and partial transcript. The group will use these materials to begin the process of developing a coding system. Once completed, we will discuss what we learned from this exercise.
  • Small group exercise taking a transcript and coding quotes using a hierarchical coding system.
  • Small group activity in which sorted coded quotes will be reviewed and discussed. The group will practice writing a paragraph to describe what they have learned about that particular theme from reading the quotes.
  • Group discussion of theoretical models used to summarize the results of interviews and focus groups.
  • Examine a list of qualitative research questions and discuss reporting and dissemination options.
