2017 will be the 14th consecutive year that the OC Section has put on its ASAT conference.  This local conference provides students and professional members alike an opportunity to present original work across a wide variety of tracts over the morning and afternoon sessions.  It also offers quite a few opportunities for networking, since the sessions, meals, and speakers aren't spread all over a vast resort.  The amazing caliber of aerospace work going on in So Cal enables us to bring in some very exciting speakers for the morning and lunch keynote presentations.  Our evening banquet that follows the conference is dedicated to recognizing the accomplishments of some of our well-deserving members.  It also includes the awarding of a cash prize for the best break-out session presentation, and culminates with our banquet speaker.  Conferences play an important part in sharing ideas and information amongst our peers.  But not everyone can afford the time and cost associated with many of the large venue conferences.  Locally hosted technical symposiums, like ASAT, that offer the networking and sharing of ideas, are a great way for AIAA sections to address our members' desire to participate.

 

Invited Keynote and Banquet Speakers

Three invited distinguished speakers will provide: a morning keynote address, an afternoon keynote address, and an evening banquet address.

  • Morning: George Bibel, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Dakota and Author of Beyond the Black Box: The Forensics of Airplane Crashes

George Bibel is the author of Beyond the Black Box: The Forensics of Airplane Crashes.  The book teaches high school science with unusual and interesting airplane accidents. The book, featured in the RAF News, was favorably reviewed by New Scientist, the New York Times, and Discovery Magazine.  Beyond the Black Box was also expanded into a training seminar presented at Boeing.  Bibel, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of North Dakota, will soon be publishing a second book about aviation accidents.  His presentation, Beyond the Black Box: The Forensics of Airplane Crashes, is based on a collection of outstanding graphics with an occasional crash video.

 

  • Afternoon: Dennis R. Jenkins, Project Director, Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, California Science Center Foundation, Preparing for the Final Mission of Space Shuttle Endeavour

Dennis R. Jenkins worked as a contractor to NASA for 33 years, mostly on the Space Shuttle Program in a variety of engineering and management roles.  After supporting the first few space shuttle launches at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC), he spent five years activating the Vandenberg Launch Site in California before the facility was closed following the Challenger accident.  Returning to KSC, he supported recovering from the accident and a variety of special projects.  During the late 1990s Jenkins was the ground systems lead for the X-33 program.  Afterward, he managed a variety of upgrade projects at KSC.  Jenkins spent 2003 on the staff of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB), 2004 as staff to the President’s Commission on the Future of Human Spaceflight and as technical staff to the Return-to-Flight Task Group evaluating the readiness of space shuttle to support STS-114, 2005 as the Verville Fellow at the National Air and Space Museum, and then returned to KSC as a consultant to United Space Alliance. In 2010 he became the USA project manager for the Orbiters on Display Working Group that delivered the space shuttle orbiters to the National Air and Space Museum, Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, California Science Center, and the KSC Visitor Complex.  Afterward Jenkins became the project director for the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center that will ultimately display Endeavour as a full launch stack.


  • Banquet: Michael S. Staab, Cassini Mission Control Engineer, Mars 2020 Mission Systems Engineer, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Perspectives from Saturn: Cassini’s Two-Decade Exploration of the Ringed Planet

Mr. Michael Staab joined NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in January 2016 as a flight controller for the Cassini spacecraft and systems engineer for the Mars 2020 project.  In his role as a flight controller, Mr. Staab had overall command and control authority of the $3 billion-dollar Cassini spacecraft and was entrusted with the safe operation of the flight system and Deep Space Network tracking stations.  In his role as a systems engineer, Mr. Staab has previously been a member of the Mars 2020 Mission Systems group and is currently a member of the Mars Exploration Rover Mission.  Mr. Staab holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Wichita State University, a Master’s of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and is a PhD candidate in the school of aerospace engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  He will give a brief overview of the Cassini mission, real-time operations, the science, and the grand-finale mission.

 

Gohardani Presentation Award in Aeronautics and Aerospace

All presenters in a scheduled track are eligible for the Gohardani Presentation Award in Aeronautics and Aerospace, sponsored by the Springs of Dreams Corporation.  It is awarded to the speaker with the most exceptional all-around presentation judged on content, organization and delivery.  This monetary award will be presented during the dinner banquet along with a certificate.
