Tardive Dyskinesia:

Improving Outcomes for Patients on Antipsychotic Medications

Monday Evening, February 27, 2017

5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

(4:30 pm - 5:00 pm Check-in & Light Refreshments)

Brook Lane Community Room

This one-hour CME presentation, jointly provided by the Potomac Center for Medical Education, Rockpointe & Brook Lane will address the complex side effect of tardive dyskinesia that sometimes occurs when treating clients with antipsychotic medications. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), “tardive dyskinesia is one of the most disturbing potential side effects of antipsychotic medications.” Patients suffer with uncontrollable, embarrassing, & potentially disabling symptoms, which may be permanent, particularly when the need for antipsychotic treatment outweighs the issue of tardive dyskinesia.

The incidence of tardive dyskinesia varies, with some studies suggesting that the overall risk of developing this disorder over the course of treatment is between 30% and 50%. Although this disorder has mainly been associated with first generation antipsychotics, it can also occur with secondgeneration agents. It is difficult to determine who will develop tardive dyskinesia or an individual’s specific risk for developing this disorder while being treated with an antipsychotic medication. The care of these   patients is made even more challenging by the fact that there are currently no FDA approved treatments for tardive dyskinesia.

 At the conclusion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize early signs and symptoms of tardive dyskinesia in at-risk patients;
  • Utilize the AIMS questionnaire to accurately identify patients with symptoms of tardive dyskinesia;
  • Evaluate the efficacy, safety, & impact on patient outcomes of an emerging agent for the treatment of tardive dyskinesi
