GA Child Welfare Legal Academy

The passage of Georgia's new Juvenile Code radically transformed the way in which courts are to respond to status offenders by prohibiting  detention and shifting the intervention from a public safety approach to a judicially-led community collaborative with planning and services for the child and family.  The policy and practice goals are to identify and address the underlying causes of the child's problematic behavior, which are often rooted in the child's needs in the context of family, school, and community.  Georgia's policy is now in line with national reforms promoting diversion of status offenders, but as a practical matter, these children can be hard to reach.  This Child Welfare Legal Academy is designed to feature local court programs, both emerging and established, that are serving status offenders effectively.  Our Visiting Scholars in Practice, Judge John B. Sumner and Judge J. Russell Jackson, will share strategies for bringing together the court and the community in the interest of children who are low risk, but high need, as models for other local jurisdictions to consider.
