While on a research trip to Germany, a young Catholic teacher stumbles upon a photo of a Jewish prisoner in Buchenwald who bears a striking resemblance to his father. His discovery prompts him to look into his family’s past and the secrets he uncovers call into question everything he thought he knew about them and himself. A gripping and stylish thriller, full of unexpected twists and turns, adapted from Fabrice Humbert’s semi-autobiographical, prize-winning novel of the same name.

HARMONIA

Sunday, January 29, 1:00 PM at St. John’s High School,

Ryken Center, Shrewsbury

A contemporary adaptation of the biblical tale of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar, set in present-day Jerusalem. Abraham, conductor of the Jerusalem Philharmonic Orchestra and his wife Sarah, the orchestra's harpist, cannot have children. Hagar, a young French horn player from East Jerusalem who joins the orchestra, offers to have a baby with Abraham for the couple. But the child, a wild and gifted musician, grows estranged from Sarah.  When he discovers the true identity of his mother, his world–and that of those around him–falls apart.

Harmonia presents a poignant metaphor to the struggle between the rival sibling religions that inhabit Jerusalem. Nominated for 4 Ophir Awards, (Israeli Film Academy), Director:  Ori Sivan, Israel, 2016, Hebrew with English Subtitles, 98 minutes.

The film opens with the collapse of the women’s balcony at an Orthodox synagogue in the old section of Jerusalem. The women struggle to reunite their close-knit community and preserve their traditions in the face of a charismatic young Rabbi who enters their lives and captivates the men. The cast features some of Israel’s leading women comics in a rousing, good-humoured tale that is rebellious but respectful in spirit, about finding a path to happiness and the subjectivity of righteousness.
