Guiding Parents & Teachers in Supporting Young Children's Development Through Play Therapy in MD

Description:

A child’s early relationships with caregivers and teachers are crucial to their emotional development, because they are in a position to shape their acquisition of vital coping skills. In this workshop, participants will learn how to support a young child’s development in two very important ways: first, the implementation of a structured, consistent, and predictable daily routine and it’s role in supporting a child’s emotional development will be discussed; and second, participants will learn how to use play to support children’s emotional resiliency. Participants will learn how to engage a young child in play, and interact with them in ways that will strengthen the attachment relationship while helping them acquire vital emotional skills that will help them learn to cope with life’s challenges, in and out of the classroom. Several play skills, derived from Non-Directive Play Therapy, will be presented. The skills include; allowing the child to lead the play, framing behavior as a choice, and supporting frustration tolerance through challenging tasks. A structured approach to limit setting, useful for parents and teachers alike, will also be shared. Participants will view video examples of the skills, and will be given the opportunity to practice in small groups.

Objectives:

  • Develop an understanding of the importance of play for young children in expressing their thoughts, feelings, and processing their experiences

  • Learn the importance of structure, consistency, and predictability in a young child’s life, and how to implement a visual daily schedule with a young child

  • Develop an understanding how to engage a young child in play, and how to use basic play therapy-based skills to enhance the attachment relationship and support the child’s acquisition of emotional coping skill

Presenter:  Christian Bellissimo, MSW, LCSW, RPT, LLC

Christian is a New Jersey Licensed Clinical Social Worker, a Certified School Social Worker, and a Registered Play Therapist with the Association for Play Therapy with degrees in Psychology and Clinical Social Work. After more than 14 years of working with young children in a wide range of settings, including a public school system, a domestic violence agency, and private practice, Christian has learned the value of integrating the most influential adults into a child’s therapy as soon as possible. His premise is that once the child’s individual therapeutic needs have been met, the adult who spends the most time with a child is in a better position to create lasting change than a play therapist who sees a child an hour a week.
