Groups for Adolescents Using Play Therapy and Drama in MD

Description:

Adolescents are often viewed as the most resistant therapy clients. Creative approaches to therapy, such as play and drama, tend to engage adolescent clients more than traditional talk therapy. This workshop will explore how play and drama therapy activities such as storytelling, role play, and puppetry are appropriate ways to engage adolescent clients. It will also explore common themes that are addressed in work with adolescents such as coping skills, anger management, assertiveness, and healthy relationships and how to use creative approaches to address these themes.

Objectives:

  • Identify issues that are unique to the developmental stage of adolescence
  • Address the tendency of teens being resistant to therapy
  • Identify topics that are relevant to adolescents in therapy
  • Discuss the history and theory of drama therapy
  • Discuss why drama therapy and other expressive modalities are better able to engage adolescents than traditional talk therapy
  • Demonstrate drama therapy activities that therapists can use in play therapy with adolescents
