An informative CPD session on January 18, 2017 organized by York District Chartered Professional Accountants’ Association (YDCPAA).

Three speakers will present on the following topics:

Purchase and Sale of an Accounting Practice
by Jamie Herman, BAS, MTax, CPA, CA, Hennick Herman LLP

This presentation will cover the practical considerations when purchasing or selling an accounting practice including the different options which it can be divested.  A scenario analysis will be provided to illustrate three different ways an unincorporated accounting practice can be sold to a potential purchaser along with other tax considerations.  A summary of tax court cases regarding the purchase and sale of an accounting practice will be provided to ensure that you aware of all the tips and traps whether you are the purchaser or seller. Jamie is the Director of Taxation at Hennick Herman LLP and has worked in accounting and tax groups ranging from small to large sized public accounting firms.  He specialized in taxation (income tax and commodity tax) where he has been involved in domestic and international tax planning and compliance.  His experience encompasses a diverse client portfolio including estate planning and corporate reorganizations for high-net worth individuals and owner-managers, foreign corporations operating in Canada, and individuals immigrating to and emigrating from Canada.  Jamie has authored numerous publications for the Canadian Tax Foundation and presents regularly on tax topics to other professionals.

Zarar Rana is a serial entrepreneur with a proven track record of founding and building software and technology companies. He has over 30 years of experience in the enterprise software and telecom space, ranging from strategic planning and product development to leading and building global ventures.

While managing Kloudville, he is also the founder & CEO of ZCOM Systems Inc. a global systems integration company specialized in implementation of Ericsson’s Order and Catalogue Management Software (Concept Wave) for telecom carriers.

Prior to founding ZCOM Systems, he was Co-founder and CEO of Concept Wave (Acquired by Ericsson in 2012). He built a global company, delivering world class Order and Catalogue Management Software products and solutions to many of the largest telecom companies.

Previously, he was the Co-founder and President of Objectel (Merged with Architel); where he developed network inventory products and delivered software development services to telecom providers. Several years later Architel was sold to Nortel Networks.

In addition, he led several senior leadership roles at Telecom companies, including AT&T and Nortel Networks.

How to Get Through the Busy Season with More Energy and Less Stress

Prepared by an accountant for accountants, this interactive fast paced session will explore the impact of the physical, mental and emotional challenges of the busy winter season. You will learn more about your body’s physiological response, why you should be concerned, and what you can do too feel better, have more energy and cope better with stress we all experience. 

 The presentation draws from recent research into the fields of human physiology, neural science, behavioural change, and health trends within the Canadian workplace. You will come away with practical suggestions that you can act upon and have a much better understanding of why you should consider making changes to your workplace.

Michael Greenwood, CPA, CA, CFP, STEP is a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in finance, consulting and business operations. He is team leader for the benefits and pension practice at Pelorus Financial Group, an innovative family practice firm dealing with the SME market place. 

 During the past 15 years that that he has specialized in providing insurance and group benefits solutions, he has witnessed a dramatic rise in the incidence of chronic illness and stress within the workplace. This trend is driving up healthcare costs and reducing work force productivity. In response, Michael has shifted the focus of the Pelorus Benefits practice to introduce preventative solutions that positively impact workplace culture, health and productivity.

 Before entering the insurance industry, Michael worked for a national consulting firm and in the private sector in various financial and senior operational roles. A long distance runner who still relishes time in the wilderness, hiking, canoeing and skiing, Michael thrives on working through unique client challenges to develop tailored solutions.
