Concierge and Direct Primary Care -
Subscription Medical Care
A small but growing number of local medical offices have adopted two new payment models; concierge medicine and Direct Primary Care (DPC).
While these two models share improved access to the physician, pre-negotiated discounts on imaging, labs, prescription drugs, and smaller patient panels, there is a difference. Concierge practices generally charge an annual access fee that often exceeds $1,000 and may still accept health insurance payments; direct primary care practices simply charge a fixed monthly fee.
Physicians are experiencing rapid change in reimbursement models for their services. Traditional fee-for-service has come under fire as promoting unnecessary visits simply to generate additional fees. In the move from fee-for-service (termed 'volume medicine') to fixed monthly payment (termed 'value medicine'), physicians have to make major changes in how they provide, document, and bill for care. The transition is not an easy one as any medical office that has moved from fee-for-service to fixed reimbursement (i.e. capitation, pay-for-performance) can attest.
In 2014, Time Magazine published an article on direct primary care (DPC) that stated in part: ‘The idea (DPC) is deceptively simple: Pay frontline doctors a fixed monthly fee directly instead of through the byzantine insurance bureaucracy.’
Can we expect to see more medical offices choose these new models that permit their physicians to focus more on accessible patient care than on their payments? Are we returning to the days when the doctor made home visits? How is new technology changing how physicians care for patients under these payment models? Come join us and find out.

About the Speakers
Eric Meyer
MyDirectMDEric has over 30 years in the sales and administration of managed health care benefits, software and consulting services focused on innovative reimbursement models in health care. Through this experience he saw that these models became more focused on managing sick care, rather than providing proactive health care and believed strongly that there was a better model. A model where the individual and physician worked in partnership in delivering and managing care that was in the best interest of the patient, not the third party payer. Thus the creation of MyDirectMD. Eric holds a Bachelor's of Science degree from Purdue University and is actively involved with his church and Special Olympics.
