Figure Drawing & Painting Intensive with Megan Euell

Drawing from observation is the basis for visual understanding and developing skills for becoming a proficient draftsman, which provides the foundation for all other visual art forms.  Figure Drawing in particular trains the eye in what is most natural to us humans, our own body and the space it occupies.  By observing the human figure, we gain insight to "how" different parts of ourselves and our environment relate to each other.  Attaining this visual grammar, of form, gesture, proportion, values in light and shadow, spatial relationships and their effects, assists us in achieving an integrated piece of work that is not just a likeness of our subject, but a connection to the elusive emotions that our physical forms inhabit.

Participants will spend the first 3 days of the course Drawing the Figure, and the following weekend, spend 3 days applying and building on those skills by Painting the Figure.

Megan Euell will use her step by step approach to:

  • demonstrate ways to process visual experience in life drawing, first through quick studies of line and gesture, then move the model into a long semi-reclined pose.
  • employ use of materials for mark-making including charcoal, graphite, white chalk, conte
  • develop the form through contour, massing, shading, expression and observing interaction between figure and ground.
  • apply the same skills of drawing to painting the figure in one long pose.
  • demonstrate use of oil paints, palette set-up, color mixing, composition, three-dimensional illusion through perspective.
  • refine personal expression and conceptual ideas, visualizing, imagining, playing, etc.
  • discuss historical approaches to figurative art as well as contemporary methods, recognizing the standards and definitions inherent in each.

Students will walk away with a greater visual vocabulary, and employ various processes of how the artist sees nature, conceives an idea and executes a drawing and painting.

This 6 day intensive workshop is an important course representing the very practice of classical foundational principals, that are an essential part of The Artist Study's core program.  We invite you to join our two part series, as a complete beginner, or a well established artist looking to upgrade your skill level in drawing, painting or sculpting.  This workshop, done in back to back weekends, is a short version of our upcoming long term program in our new location, where spring term begins in April.  Introduce yourself to the high quality training and practice of drawing and painting.
