Justice Seeking Workshop

Northaven is developing a Justice Team under the inspiration and leadership of Faith in Texas. We want to include as many members as possible, and to help them be more effective, Church In Society is offering a workshop on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

After suffering through such a divisive Presidential campaign we are asking ourselves what is our part in all of this? Indeed, the forces at work in the country and in the world leave us shaken and unsure of the future. What is our role? What can we do? Our faith provides the guidance to our answer. We even have signs in the Atrium to give us a clear direction—we live at the intersection of "Faith and Justice."

So what does it mean to seek justice? For starters we need to become more actively engaged in our community and to pay attention to public policies being developed at the local, state, and national level; the popular expression is "public engagement." I call it being active, thoughtful citizens, undergirded by our faith. This upcoming workshop will provide tools on how to take actions that will seek to do justice in our community and world. It is not time to be silent. It is a time to witness.

We are not acting alone. Faith in Texas has recruited congregations of all faiths to work in concert on such issues as immigration, criminal justice reform, and payday lending regulation. There are other issues of concern—certainly the protection of LGBTQ rights and working against all forms of discrimination, whether it be our stubborn national shame of racism or the more recent acts of hate against our Muslim neighbors. The Citizens Climate Lobby and the League of Women Voters regularly meet at Northaven and include several members of our congregation.

The Workshop is a kickoff of a concerted effort of witness and action.  Bring your concerns, bring your ideas, bring a friend, and become a charter member of Northaven’s Justice Team.

Register for the workshop on Jan. 28 by using the link below. As a participant you will be co-leading this workshop as everyone draws on his or her life experiences.
