Trade is as high on the American political agenda as it has ever been -- at least in our lifetime -- and no bilateral relationship looms larger than the one with China. And no wonder. Total trade last year was over $575 billion -- and that's not counting services. Add to that, first, U.S. investment in China of over $75 billion, with smaller but steadily growing Chinese investment here. Then add tough rhetoric on the U.S. side and tough industrial policies in China, and you have a potentially volatile mix that deserves all of the attention it is getting.
At this next GBD colloquium, we will hear from Americans who have a big stake in the successful management of U.S.-China trade relations: those who are being hit hard by China's overcapacity in key industries, those who have invested in China and need to be successful there, and those U.S. exporters whose livelihoods depend on access to China's markets.
