Non-invasive Therapies for Altered Sensation, Dr. Ceib Phillips – UNC School of Dentistry
2.0 hours CEU

Course description:
The potential for injury to sensory nerves in the orofacial region during dental and oral and maxillofacial procedures is of particular concern due to the proximity of the nerves to the surgical sites. More than a million people in the U.S. are thought to suffer from such iatrogenic, surgically-associated injuries to the trigeminal nerve. Numbness or other altered sensations of the face or lips generally resolve reasonably quickly but the presence of these sensations can negatively impact a patient’s perception of recovery. Recently, we have shown that simple facial exercises the patient can do at home/work can improve patients’ accommodation to these sensations and also reduce what the patient may perceive as the negative impact of these sensations on daily life activities. And we have preliminary evidence that vitamin B12 may be helpful in accelerating nerve recovery.

Course Objectives:
1. Describe the effect of demographic, clinical, and psychological factors on patient-reported pattern of recovery
2. Learn the sequence of facial exercises used in the Sensory Retraining Trial
3. Describe the difference between accommodation and nerve recovery

Dr. Ceib Phillips
Dr. Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. She received her Ph.D. in Anatomy at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1976 and her M.P.H. in Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina in 1990.

Dr. Phillips currently holds memberships in such organizations as the American Statistical Association, Biometric Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Association for Dental Research, and the Society for Clinical Trials and is on the editorial board of JOMS, J Dent Hyg and Patient Preference and Adherence. Her research interests focus on biostatistical applications and data management of clinical trials. She is the principal investigator for a NIDCR grant, "Sensory Retraining following Orthognathic Surgery, and an investigator on a second NIDR grant, Functional Outcomes of Cleft Lip Surgery. She is also the director of the data coordinating center for a multi-center project on management of patients with third molars funded by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Safe Opioid Prescribing—What Dental Healthcare Providers Need to Know! Dr. Blake Fagan
1.0 hours CEU
This one-hour session meets the NCBDE requirements for annual continuing education of opioid prescribers.

Course Description:
Western North Carolina has been hit particularly hard by the opioid epidemic, which includes heroin, other illicit drugs and prescription pain medications. In 2014, 17 of 23 Western N.C. counties ranked among the top in the state in the rate of fatal overdoses– more than 20 deaths for every 100,000 residents. Statewide data also show that all but five counties in the region have higher-than-average rates of opioid pills prescribed per person, particular in counties near the Tennessee border.

Learn about this epidemic in our region and steps to take to perform safe opioid prescribing and consider safer alternatives for treating dental pain. Together, let’s turn the tide on opioid overdosing and death in our region!

Course Objectives:
At this conclusion of this hour-long lecture/discussion, participants will be able to:
Cite the impact of opioid overdosing and death in WNC

  1. Implement safer opioid prescribing protocols and  access the CSRS as needed for dental patients in acute pain, and ways to manage patients with chronic pain on opioids who present with acute dental pain
  2. Discuss opioid alternatives to treat dental pain
