2017 Young Artist Piano Competition 

Join us for the 16th Annual FGCU/Steinway Piano Society Young Artist Piano Competition!

Competition recital performances will be during these times:

  • Friday, April 28, 2017:  3:00 - 7:00 PM
  • Saturday, April 29, 2017:  8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Rules, Regulations and Guidelines

Eligibility

Student pianists currently enrolled in grades K-12 in Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, and Lee County public or private schools, or county residents who are home schooled.

Categories

Early Elementary    Ages 5-8

Late Elementary    Ages 9-11

Junior    Ages 12-14

Senior    Ages 15-18

  • Category placement is based on age as of April 28, 2017.
  • First place winners from the previous year automatically are advanced to the next category.
  • Previous first place winners who choose not to participate when advanced to the next category are required to sit out from the competition until they reach the age level of the category to which they were advanced.
  • If a student wins first place twice in the Senior Division or twice as the Overall Winner, they are retired from the competition.

Repertoire

Competitors must memorize and perform two pieces of standard published solo repertoire by master composers. The first piece must represent the Baroque or Classical era (1600-1825). The 2nd piece must be from the Romantic, Impressionist or Contemporary eras (1825-present). Composer dates and era classifications are found on the MTNA website. http://www.mtna.org/media/74548/ComposerClassifications.pdf 

An original copy of each piece must be provided at the competition with measures numbered at the beginning of every line. No teaching or method pieces, no cuts, no photocopies, no computer generated scores. Repeats are allowed, at the discretion of the teacher, if within time limits.

Time Limits

Early Elementary   5 minutes

Late Elementary   8 minutes

Junior    12 minutes

Senior   15 minutes

  • Performers who exceed their time limit will be stopped.

 Application

Applications may be submitted online or by mail.  All application forms must be complete and submitted(postmarked for mailed applications) on or before Friday, March 10, 2017 and include a $25.00 application fee payable to the Steinway Piano Society.  After March 10, only online applications will be accepted until Friday, March 24, 2017, with a late application fee of $35.00.

No applications will be accepted after March 24. 

Competition

Competitors will be grouped according to their age as of April 28, 2017 and will perform in mini-recitals.  Competitors will be notified of their performance recital time via e-mail by April 14, 2017.

Please note: The recital hall and/or practice rooms at the Bower School of Music are NOT available for warm-up on the day of the competition or anytime before.

Dress Code

Concert attire is expected for both the Competition and the Awards Recital.

Notification

Teachers of finalists will be contacted by phone following the competition on Saturday, April 29, 2017 and told which piece their student(s) will perform at the Awards Recital on Sunday, April 30th.  It is the teacher's responsibility to notify their student(s).

Finalists will also be posted at www.Steinway-YAPC.com.

All finalists are required to perform.

Awards Recital

SUNDAY, April 30, 2017, 3:00 PM

U. Tobe Recital Hall, FGCU Bower School of Music.

Presentation of all awards and prizes will take place at the conclusion of the recital.

This concert is free and open to the public!

Additional Winner Performances

Winners will be invited to perform for the Steinway Piano Society members and patrons during the 2017-2018 concert series. Date and time will be announced.

Once you've done that, all that's left to do is submit your application and start practicing!
