Since the printing industry has been deemed a high hazard industry by OSHA for amputations and combustible dust, the number of inspections, citations, and penalties has skyrocketed. On average, OSHA is inspecting at least one to two printing operations per week and they are finding many violations. There is a particular focus on compliance with the newly revised Hazard Communication Standard, machine guarding, lockout/tagout, and combustible dust. In addition, OSHA has made a significant change to its injury reporting requirements that now will force many companies to self-report when serious accident occur.

About Gary A. Jones is the Assistant Vice President of Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Affairs at the Printing Industries of America. His primary responsibility is to monitor and analyze EHS regulatory activities at all government levels and provide representation on behalf of the printing industry. In doing so, Mr. Jones works closely with the federal and state-level Environmental Protection Agencies (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and other agencies. He also provides membership assistance through a variety of approaches including presentations, responding to inquiries, writing, and consulting services. Mr. Jones is also heading up Printing Industries of America’s efforts for the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, an organization dedicated to assisting printers respond to the customer demand for sustainable printing.
