Being a successful beekeeper means arming yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to face today's beekeeping challenges. The Arboretum's Beekeeping 101 workshop will help you do just that. Held on two consecutive Saturdays in the Arboretum's Jones Center classroom, this workshop will include 12 hours of instruction and includes some hands-on experience with beekeeping equipment.
Taught by experienced members of the Central Washington Beekeepers Association, the class is designed for those who are seriously considering beekeeping and/or who wish to brush up on their basic beekeeping skills. No previous experience or training is required. Major topics include physiology of honey bees, bee behavior, the role of honey bees in plant pollination, seasonal tasks, hive assembly and management, honey production/collection, bee pests and diseases, tools and equipment, and coping with common problems. You'll also learn about the expected costs and the time needed to be a successful beekeeper.
Individuals who complete the 2-day workshop will be able to purchase bees through the Central Washington Beekeeper Association network once bees become available.
The class will begin at 9am and ends at 4pm. Lunch is an hour long from noon to 1pm. Feel free to bring your own lunch or plan to eat offsite. Coffee service is provided throughout the day.
Come prepared to take notes and bring a folder/binder to put handouts in. Dress for the weather and wear walking shoes since the restroom is in a nearby building and the class will be visiting the Arboretum's apiary (bee hives).
