A 6-month program to guide succession planning and leadership transitions

Our national team of leadership, transition, and strategy professionals are the foremost experts on helping nonprofits capture the power of leadership change.Raffa’s cutting edge Succession and Transition Planning Institute brings a cohort of nonprofit leaders together to actively engage in a comprehensive 6-month program.The Institute offers learning opportunities for board members and senior leadership staff and leverages Raffa's expertise around leadership, change, and transition. It also connects a group of nonprofit executives to one other.

Program Overview

Each Institute will engage 5 to 10 nonprofit CEOs in a 6-month program centered on 4 guiding principles:

  1. Organization Sustainability:  Identify strengths and weaknesses that impact the organization’s ability to thrive during a leadership transition
  2. Succession Planning: Advance the organization's capacity to withstandunplanned absences/departures of key personnel
  3. Leader Development: Support the leadership team in working together toadvance succession planning goals
  4. Board Engagement in Planned Departures: Understand the Board'srole and responsibilities during the executive transition process

The Institute offers a space to explore best practices and features:

  • Learning through peer-to-peer sharing and virtual and in-person workshops (and interactive webinars that include senior staff and Board members)
  • Individualized consulting for CEOs and Board members fromexperienced experts providing guidance and tailored support
  • Networking opportunities with peers to build relationships and connect across skill sets, industries, and personal experiences

Nonprofit CEOs will leave the Institute with Take Aways that include:

  • Access to resources, best practices and new ideas for approaching transitions and organizational planning
  • Tools and guides that can be adapted based on their needs and in relation to the four main principles
  • Connection to a network of peers to develop relationships that transcend the program

Workshop Facilitator

Rachael Gibson, Manager/Senior Consultant, Sustainability and Succession Planning

Rachael serves as a senior consultant for transition planning and organizational strategy engagements. Rachael is skilled at providing management consulting, including leadership transition support to nonprofit organizations and philanthropic institutions.

In prior roles, Rachael managed grantmaking programs and spearheaded numerous capacity building initiatives, including ones aimed at deepening the leadership development opportunities for nonprofit leaders, strengthening the back office systems for nonprofit organizations and evaluating the effectiveness of advocacy efforts. Rachael also developed a national coaching program for leaders of color. Furthermore, Rachael led multiple capacity building and avealuation projects for government agencies. She has facilitated numerous collective action initiatives and led large program evaluation projects for grantmaking entities aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of their programs.

In addition to her management consulting expertise, Rachael has facilitated diversity and leadership development trainings, served on various nonprofit boards and task forces, and presented workshops at local and national conferences. She also served on the board of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. Rachael received a Master's Degree in Community and Urban Planning from the University of Maryland, College Park.
