Dr. Galen Stucky will present several examples of UCSB projects that have addressed century-old problems. The first case was in response to a request from the Office of Naval Research to find a better solution for managing uncontrolled hemorrhaging on the 2004 Iraq battle field. This problem has a recorded history of over 5500 years.
Two other examples deal with the efficient use of energy and food: the conversion of stranded natural gas (Gas Reaction Technologies & Reaction 35) and the enhancement of the lifetime of fresh food produce (Apeel Science). The combination of student, intellectual, and organizational resources at UCSB made success possible in these examples.
Our Speaker is Dr. Galen Stucky, UCSB Professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Essam Khashoggi Chair in Materials Chemistry. After earning his doctorate from Iowa State University in 1962, Galen Stucky held positions at the University of Illinois, Sandia Laboratories, and DuPont Central Research before joining the faculty of the UCSB in 1985. He has published 790 scientific articles and has been awarded three dozen US patents. Honors include the ACS Award in Chemistry of Materials (2002); the Advanced Technology Applications for Combat Casualty Care (ATACCC) Award (2008); and the Prince of Asturias Award, with Avelino Corma and Mark E. Davis (2014). He was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences in 2013.
