February 2017 Dinner Meeting - Byron Franz 

Our February meeting will feature two speakers Byron Franz, Special Agent for the FBI and Jim Buck, Gateway College Instructor and President of WMCPA. 

Byron is a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and has worked national security investigations for over 19 years.  He is currently assigned to FBI Milwaukee's Cyber Squad, where his job is to develop security partnerships between the FBI and private industry, academia, and state/local government agencies to better protect the United States against cyber and economic espionage threats.  Byron  has an undergraduate degree (Russian and International Relations) and law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jim Buck’s career in IT has spanned more than 35 years, primarily in the manufacturing and healthcare industries. A thirteen year president of the Wisconsin Midrange Computer Professional Association (www.wmcpa.org) and has served on a number of teams developing IBM and COMMON certification tests. Jim has co-authored with Bryan Meyers a number of IBM i books that are used in many colleges, "Programming in ILE RPG" 5th Edition being the latest in 2015.

     Other accomplishments include; recipient of the 2007 IBM System i Innovation – Education Excellence Award, named 2013/2016 IBM Champion Power Systems and the 2014 COMMON Presidents Award. Jim is a programming instructor at Gateway Technical College and is active in the IBM i community working to help students, colleges and companies develop the next generation of IBM i professionals.


Session I - Byron Franz - Wisconsin Insiders

The theft of business information by malicious hackers and insiders costs the U.S. hundreds of billion dollars a year.  It also results in the loss of U.S. jobs and competitiveness.   Byron will highlight several Wisconsin cases involving alleged insiders, describe the formation on an Insider Threat Team, and suggest various ways to detect and mitigate the malicious insider.

 

Session II - Jim Buck - Failure to Modernize - The Real Cost!

In 2008; Jim wrote an article for COMMON called the “A Perfect Storm” This article discussed the low enrollment rates for Information Technologies classes in the United States. Fast forward to 2016, Information Technology education in colleges has made a comeback. Now there is a shortage of qualified young IT professionals with enterprise skills.

            The shortage of young IBM i Professionals will be a significant challenge to you and your company.
