Small Town and Rural Multi-Modal Networks Guide 

The National Center for Rural Road Safety (Safety Center) is hosting a FREE, 1.5-hour online webinar. 

Webinar Description
This webinar will provide an overview of the Small Town and Rural Multimodal Networks Guide, published in January 2017 by the Federal Highway Administration. 

Webinar Outcomes
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the general uses and benefits of this new guidance.
  • Understand the three topic areas in which contextual guidance is provided.
  • Identify the speed, volume, roadway types, and land use areas in which each treatment is best suited for application.

Target Audience
This training is directed towards a very broad safety audience including, but not limited to, law enforcement, planners, engineers, first responders, elected officials, public health, tourism agencies, and safety culture experts. Participants should have some basic familiarity with transportation safety.

 Course Presenters 

Tim Gustafson, AICP, Alta Planning + Design

  • Tim is a certified planner and is a senior associate and office manager for Alta Planning + Design in their Chicago office. With more than a decade of experience in the field of transportation, he has focused his career on the planning, design, education and training in the best practices for active transportation. In the Chicago metropolitan region, Tim has worked on projects for various municipalities and agencies including the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, the Regional Transportation Authority, and the state departments of transportation for Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Vermont.

 Nick Falbo, Alta Planning + Design

  • Nick is an associate with Alta Planning + Design in the Portland office, and specializes in active transportation planning and design. Nick was the lead associate at Alta responsible for development of the STAR Guide. In addition to his work in development of best practices for planning and design, Nick is a certified trainer for the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO).
