Brunch: Grassroots Activism for Social Change

Through grassroots activism, citizens like you can become change agents.  Whether advocating for more school funding or stronger action on climate change, grassroots activists know how to effectively organize and engage others to bring about real social change.

Join SAGE and the Oregon Environmental Council for a nuts-and-bolts workshop on how to be an effective grassroots advocate. Together, we’ll explore key strategies to develop campaign messages, build and sustain support, and share tips on how to align your campaign with other social movements. This workshop is relevant for those working on any social cause, but we’ll spotlight examples of ongoing environmental causes that need more grassroots support.

Special thanks to our guest speakers!

Sophia Aguilera is the program and campaign coordinator at OEC. During her time at OEC, she has assisted with two legislative proposals, one to fund a youth transit access grant program and another to reduce toxic chemicals in children’s products. Her passionate volunteerism led her to become one of OEC’s inaugural recipients of the Kevin Rose Volunteer Award. She graduated from University of Portland with a Bachelors of Arts in Environmental Ethics & Policy and Spanish. 

 

Chris Hagerbaumer is deputy director of programs at the Oregon Environmental Council (OEC) where she provides leadership, support, and coordination to OEC’s policy staff, including campaign planning for legislation. Chris has a background in environmental policy, advocacy and education, including work with the Environmental Law and Policy Center in Chicago and the U.S. Peace Corps. She has a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago and an undergraduate degree in German from Reed College.

 

Daisy Quiñonez is a Program Organizer for The Bus Project. She is passionate about racial justice, LGBTQ+ justice, reproductive rights, immigrant rights, and youth empowerment. Prior to joining The Bus Project, she served as a field organizer in a statewide ballot measure campaign, organized students on issues of public higher education, and served as the Co-Chair of the Multnomah Youth Commission. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor’s in Planning, Public Policy, and Management.
