Guidance and Discipline: For parents of children 12 months to 4 years

The life of a young child can be overwhelming and confusing. This can lead to tantrums and meltdowns - often in the middle of the grocery store. It is difficult to meet all the demands in your life: deadlines at work, other children in the family, the in-laws, soccer practice, school volunteer commitments, and don't forget...a spouse. As we’re rushing from one obligation to the next, we can be stopped cold in our tracks by a child's tantrum - immovable and louder than we ever thought possible. In this session we explore the range of a emotions we see in young children, how to help them recognize and tame them, and how as parents we can affect the moments when they peak.

Based on the foundations of Montessori education, learn why your child responds differently in different situations and how you can help maximize positive experiences for your child. We will also explore the benefits how choosing positive interactions will support long term development of self-control and independent thought.

We will discuss:

  • Gentle ways to acknowledge and manage strong emotions
  • What is typical behavior and what are typical expectations for a young child
  • How to support your child's emotional development and encourage positive behavior
  • Long term benefits of supporting the development of self-regulation through gentle discipline

Sarah Moudry

Sarah received her AMI Assistants-to Infancy Training at The Montessori Institute in Denver, Colorado and her AMI Primary Training at the Montessori Training Center of Minnesota. She holds a M.Ed. in Montessori Education and a B.A. in Environment, Textiles, and Design and is a Professional Member of the Interior Design Society.

Sarah is the author of many books and educational videos and keeps a blog about parenting and Montessori education and interior design at She is also the founder of Studio June, an active parent and child-learning environment offering weekly classes and workshops for families, based in Houston, Texas. She draws on her experience as a designer, educator, and mother of three to inspire parents to see their child’s potential and find their own comfort in parenting.

She may look familiar to those who have seen the Montessori parenting video, Edison's Day!  She has been an excellent resource to the Montessori community specifically on the needs of young children, and we are excited to welcome her to Seton Montessori Institute!

The seminar will be held at our Lab School, Seton Montessori School, located in Clarendon Hills, IL.  There is a fee for parent participants, but educators who are registered for the Spring Seminar on April 1st have complimentary registration with the registration code they were given upon registration.
