Landscapes for Living: A Forum on Eco-Friendly Gardening and Lawn Care

Whether you're a beginning gardener or a long-time green thumb, you'll find inspiration and information as we explore earth-friendly ways to improve and preserve the beauty, health and habitat of our town, one backyard at a time. Landscapes for Living: A Forum on Eco-Friendly Gardening and Lawn Care is an all-day sustainability symposium featuring presentations by Dr. Doug Tallamy speaking on gardening with native plants, and Chip Osborne of Osborne Organics speaking on natural turf management; how-to workshops; information tables and more. A complete schedule of the day is below:

10:00 am - Join us to check in, save your seat, and check out these great offerings:

  • “Dig It: Soil Sampling How-To” with Cricket Vlass, Landscape Designer for Town of Wellesley - Cricket will host a soil table, providing tips on how to collect a soil sample in your yard to find out what your soil needs to support a lush landscape.
  • New England Wildflower Society’s Kathy Shamberger will host a table with information on native plants and programming offered at Garden in the Woods in Framingham.
  • “The Art of Nature” exhibit by members of Wellesley Women Artisans will be on display in the Wakelin Room, where the first presentation will take place.
  • Books by Doug Tallamy available for purchase: Bringing Nature Home and The Living Landscape. Doug will be signing books at lunch time.
  • Backyard composters and rain barrels available to order at a discount through the Wellesley Natural Resources Commission.

 11:00 am - “Creating Living Landscapes” - Opening Keynote Presentation by Doug Tallamy. Doug Tallamy is a nationally known expert on native plants and landscaping. He will discuss how our yards and gardens can be an essential part of the local ecosystem and what we can do to make that happen.

  12:30 - 1:00 pm - Lunch break with book signing, soil sampling, and other information tables open. Complimentary light lunch provided.

  1:00 pm - 2:00 pm - Choose from Three Workshops

 2:00 - 3:00 pm - “Help, I Don't Know What's in My Lawn” Closing Keynote Presentation by Chip Osborne. Chip Osborne is the country’s leading expert on natural and sustainable lawn care. With his easy, interactive format, Chip will introduce practical strategies for creating a lush, low-cost organic lawn.

Join us for a day that will enlighten and energize your approach to gardening and lawn care. This event is FREE and open to the public. As space is limited, advance registration is encouraged. All registrants will be entered to win prizes.
