Meeting the Needs of the Angry Client While Tending to Our Own Wellness

3 Continuing Education Hours
LMSW/LCSW/LMHC/LCAT/LMFT

Anger can be a difficult emotion to encounter in our work with clients. In this workshop we will explore two important intersecting topics: working with what is often very challenging – anger – and self care.  We will seek to understand the many faces of anger, the ways we are impacted by it, strategies for effectively dealing with it, and then shift gears into the topic of compassion fatigue, self care, and post-traumatic growth.

Who Should Attend:
Social Workers, Mental Health Counselors, Creative Arts Therapists, Marriage and Family Therapists, and any professional that is working with adults affected by anger and hurt.

The following topics will be discussed:
We will explore the topic of anger in depth - understanding it as an 'iceberg emotion', the many ways it presents, what it triggers in us, and strategies for effectively helping someone.  We will then explore compassion fatigue, secondary trauma, and self care with a focus on post-traumatic growth.

Participants will learn to balance the needs of the client with their own, particularly as it relates to the difficult emotion of anger.  They will also learn the importance of self care in mitigating the effects of secondary trauma. The concept of post-traumatic growth will be explored.

The participant will be able to:
  • Gain a deeper understanding of anger in ourselves and our clients.
  • Learn effective ways to communicate with clients where anger is present.
  • Gain an understanding of the effects of compassion fatigue and secondary trauma as well as strategies for dealing with these effects.
