 2017 United Way Day at         The Texas Capitol 

Join United Ways of Texas and your United Way GBACC peers for a day of conversation, connection, and advocacy at the Texas Capitol.  We will convene for United Way Day at the Texas Capitol to show collective support for United Way priorities in education, financial stability, and health.

We're looking for engagement and involvement from across Baytown and Chambers County; help us fill the bus & halls under the dome! Community leaders, partners, and volunteers are welcome and encouraged to attend. Wear your United Way gear and be #TexasUnited proud!

Discussion Topics to Include:

EDUCATION

  • Permanent funding for pre-kindergarten program established by HB 4 that emphasizes quality such as full-day, ratios, and parent engagement
  • Support for programs that strengthen the successful transition from early learning through elementary school
  • Incentivize companies to offer paid internships, externships, job shadowing, and apprenticeships for high school students and beyond
  • Support for opportunities that ensure students successful transition through middle/high school and post-secondary learning and into careers 
FINANCIAL STABILITY
  • Support initiatives that build financial capability and assets of low-to-moderate individuals and families
  • Incentivize communities to develop industry-led partnerships that build skills with paid internships that link individuals to career pathways
HEALTH
  • Increased funds for promising and/or evidence-based practices that reduce abuse and neglect such as home visitation
  • Significantly increase funding and support for children in foster care such as mental health services, human resources, and other infrastructure needs that impact the quality of life for children in care
  • Health & Wellness Adequate mental health resources for under-served, high-need populations;
  • Support opportunities to connect families and individuals with affordable health care.

5:00am
We will meet in the United Way GBACC parking lot, and leave promptly at 5:00am. 
Packets will be distributed on the way and discussion topics and "How-To's" will be reviewed.

8:00am - 9:30am
Drop-in for Registration, Issues, and Information Breakfast

10:00am - 11:30am (approximate time frame)
United Way Day Resolution Passage
Texas State Capitol Building, House and/or Senate Chambers 

11:00am - 4:00pm
Legislative Visits With Elected Officials or Staff 
Hospitality room for resources and gathering will be available in the Capitol extension

4:00pm - 5:00pm
United Way Day at the Texas Capitol Reception: Appetizers, Beverages, and Networking

If you would like to ride separately, and leave earlier or later, you are more than welcome to do so. We have provide some options in the area.

WHERE TO PARK

For United Way Day at the Texas Capitol events, we strongly recommend parking in the Capitol Visitors Garage first thing in the morning.  It is located at 1201 San Jacinto, between Trinity and San Jacinto Streets and 12th and 13th Streets.  Map and rate information here.  

Note: If needed, overflow parking is on the streets around the Capitol, where quarters or credit cards will be necessary.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 

  • Dress professionally with comfortable shoes. If you don't have a United Way T-shirt, please stop by and pick one up prior to March 1.
     
  • Breakfast and snacks will be provided, however Lunch & Dinner will be on your own. Visit Capitol Grill, which is located in the capitol. 
     
  • Participants must attend 8:00 am training if not riding the bus from Baytown.
