2017 Orton-Gillingham 60 Hour Associate Level Training

This 10 day, 60 hour course comprises the training needed for the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) Associate level of membership. Participants will learn the essential components of the approach, increase their knowledge of the structure of the English language, and learn how to develop and carry out lesson plans that reflect the O-G approach. Participants will complete three readings and responses/reflections, and create, revise, and role-play presenting lesson plans with their fellow participants.

The course includes materials needed to support the teacher in carrying out the approach in the classroom or in a special education setting. Participants will complete three readings and responses/reflections, and create, revise, and role-play presenting lesson plans with their colleagues.

In additional to the 60 hours of classroom instruction, five hours of practicum are included.  Participants are asked to identify their own practicum student; the tutoring may be done with the student at the training site during the 4 - 5 PM block on designated days or at another time and location more convenient for the participant and student.

To receive a certificate of completion, participants must attend the full 60 hours of training. Please note that there is a six day break around the 4th of July holiday and that one session is scheduled on Saturday (July 8th).

Sessions run from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM for the six of the days and from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM for the five days that include a practicum component.   Sessions break at mid-day for lunch which is on your own.

Participants wishing to complete the requirements for AOGPE Associate level membership/ certification will need to make separate arrangements for a supervised practicum with at least ten observations during an eight-month period at an additional cost of $1,000.  A Bachelor’s degree is required for certification at the Associate level.  For more information regarding AOGPE membership levels and associated training requirements, go to the Academy website (click).
