We cannot ever make an Academy happen with out the critical expertise of the UMCOR Consultants that come to teach us best practices in the world of Disaster Response.
Clergy needing CEU can recieve 2 hours of CEU credit through the Methodist Theological School of Ohio. The cost for the CEU's is $40.00 total.

This Academy is open to those who desire to further their knowledge in UMVIM-UMCOR Disaster Response. We welcome volunteers who desire to work with survivors of natural disasters in the most vulnerable populations of the country. Come and meet those who work in Disaster Response and those who would like to serve!

Thursday Classes
Foundations For Disaster Ministry (AM) – Why engage in disaster ministry? What are the phases of disaster? Who are the players? What are the functions and oppertunites for volunteers? Where do resources come from? What are our mission and values? We will address these questions and more! This session is the foundational training that grounds all of our efforts in disaster ministry. If you have not attended this in the past few years, please put this on your schedule! - UMCOR Staff
Early Response Team - Train The Trainer Part 1 (PM) - Become an UMCOR-authorized ERT Trainer! Those who successfully complete this course will be able to train ERT Basic within their Annual conferences. Those who attend should be willing and able to demonstrate and articulate ERT best practices. Pre-requisites: Recomendation from your conference Disaster Responese Coordinator and a current ERT badge.
Long Term Recovery Development (PM) - The recovery of many individuals and famlies is often dependent upon a well-functioning group effort. This workshop will provide participants an opportunity to explore ways they might participate in the group's development on behalf of the church. Foundations for Disaster Ministry is a pre-requisit for this session.

Connecting Neighbors Training - Learn about the context of disaster ministry and how this curriculum can be used to inspire congregations and communities to be better able to prepare for a disaster, and to respond to their neighbors in helpful, cooperative and caring ways on behalf of the church and in the sprit of Jesus Christ. Disaster Spiritual and Emotional Care. Introduction - All United Methodist disaster response has embedded within it our mandate to be a caring Christian presence in the midst of the pain that emcompasses disaster survivors. This introduction will offer strategies to support the inner emotional and spiritual turmoil that survivors experience as they face the outward physical challenges of disaster recovery. Cathy Earl.
Disaster Spiritual and Emotional Care. Outreach Strategies - Building on a strong foundation of strategies to support the rebuilding of broken hearts and wounded souls, this class will consider particular ministries for caring United Methodist congregations, including a way to link survivors to timely information and critical referrals in the chaotic relief phase. ERT 200 Level Classes - For currently badged ERTs and authorized trainers. This session will teach best practices in Clean-Out, Team Leadership, On-Site Management and Site Assessmnet. UMVIM Fundraising - Finding creative ways to fund your Mission Journey is always a challenge. This class will offer differnt opportunites that you may not have thought of to help find the funding that you need. Ted Frost
UMVIM Team Troubleshooting - Developing a stong mission team for domestic or international mission work is critical for a successful journery. Find out ways to put together a group that will make everyone's mission experience a great one. Learn what may not have worked well in the past.
Cultural Considerations - When traveling anywhere from our home we often journery into cultures different from our own. This class will teach how to "do good and do no harm" in the differnt areas that we work in. - Deanna Stickley-Miner
