Featured Presenter: Patricia C. Dowds, Ph.D
Patricia C. Dowds, Ph.D. is a Clinical Psychologist and Co-Director of Family Therapy Institute of Suffolk, and the past Executive Director of the Minuchin Center for the Family in New York City. Through these two agencies she has worked on developing programs to keep children out of the court system and to reduce conflict in divorce.
Dr. Dowds began her professional career working in a Community Mental Health Center. As most women were at the time, she was assigned primarily child and adolescent cases. Fairly quickly, she realized that she was asking the children, who happened to be the family members with the least power and resources, to effect positive change in a complex family system. This insight led to a long process of becoming trained in systems thinking that would take her from working with families to increasingly working with organizations and mental health agencies to effect constructive change.
