Take part in a day of evidence-based strategies for identifying, preventing, and reversing obesity, diabetes and metabolic roots of disease.

Try This for Healthcare Professionals takes place the day before the big Try This West Virginia conference. It is a collaboration between the WVU School of Medicine Eastern Division, Try This West Virginia, The Future of Nursing WV, the WV Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, and other WV providers, institutions, and community leaders.

The June 2-3 Try This conference is sold out! But you can still register for the conference for Healthcare Professionals, which takes place Thursday, June 1, from 9 AM to 5 PM.  See schedule below.

Continuing Education Credit

Physicians, nurses, and dieticians can receive 6 hours of continuing education credit for their attendance and participation in the June 1 conference.  The June 2-3 Try This conference is sold out, so those CEUs are no longer available.  

Preliminary Program

Kicking off with an introduction to Try This West Virginia, the conference will offer practical strategies for engaging patients and communities in movement, food, and stress management.  Speakers will highlight approaches to preventing and reversing diabetes, childhood obesity, and dietary approaches for opioid dependence.

Internationally renowned scientific journalist and Keynote speaker Gary Taubes will challenge you on the root causes of metabolic disease and strategies to combat the public health crisis of obesity and diabetes. Healthcare innovators from across West Virginia will share their work, giving you new ideas and inspiration.

Practical strategies for greater impact: Motivational Interviewing; Approaches to behavior change in areas with limited resources

Friday and Saturday: Try This workshops eligible for continuing medical education credits include:

Child care in your community: Is it promoting healthy habits? Children are much more likely to stay healthy all their lives if they develop healthy habits in their first five years, research shows.  

Get funded:  Are you writing a grant for the first or second time? Maximize your chances for success! Learn from people who know what they’re talking about. You’ll cover: framing your proposal / identifying partners and mission, writing SMART goals, and more! 

Stress reduction opportunities in your community: outdoors, worksite, church, anywhere: Stress is a leading cause of heart disease and diabetes. It’s just as important as physical activity and good nutrition. How can you increase opportunities for stress reduction in your community?

Little Money, No Time: Still want to eat healthy? On a shoestring budget, with little time, can you still eat a healthy diet? You bet! But it takes planning and know-how. Each presenter offers solid advice and tips from a different angle.  

Prescribing Prevention: Getting the medical profession involved with your community projects   Let’s get doctors, nurses and dieticians on our community teams! How can they help you spread prevention?  

Nutrition and Physical Activity as tools in Drug Recovery: Hear from inspiring West Virginians who use physical activity, nutrition and mindfulness to make it easier for people to fight drug abuse. How can your community do the same? 

Healthy Bodies Health Spirits: Wellness Teams in Churches. Hear from West Virginians who already have wellness teams in their churches. Learn how to make this a part of your church's spiritual mission. Find out how to join West Virginia's growing healthy faith movement.
