This year’s 2017 LiveTalk Series will take on a new look as we offer a new evening lecture format. For this year, instead of our usual discussion format, we will offer an hour lecture on review of the literature on a given topic related to sensory integration and evidence-based practice. Our goal this year is to update you on the latest research in specific areas of practice related to sensory integration and to facilitate translation of this research to evidence-based clinical practice. EBP involves assessment and integration of many types of research evidence and this series will present research from all areas of EBP practice. We hope that you will join us for this exciting new series.

This lecture will discuss the differences between Ayres Sensory Integration® Intervention and intervention using sensory-based strategies. Misrepresentations of sensory-based interventions in the sensory integration efficacy literature will be addressed. Current literature on the efficacy of various sensory-based interventions will be presented as well as a discussion of how these findings fit within an evidence-based practice model.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this LiveTalk the participant will be able to:
- Be able to state the difference between Ayres Sensory Integration® Intervention and interventions using sensory-based strategies.
- Describe how sensory integration intervention and sensory-based interventions have been misrepresented in the efficacy literature and give two examples of such studies.
- Describe the current efficacy literature supporting the use of at least two sensory-based interventions.
About the Speaker: Teresa May-Benson is the Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation as well as a practicing occupational therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. She is active in conducting research related to sensory integration through the Spiral Foundation’s Sensory Processing Research Center and Laboratory. She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention, has authored book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Dr. May-Benson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and her master’s degree from Boston University with a concentration in sensory integration and school system therapy. She was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow in the Doctoral Program in Therapeutic Studies at Boston University. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis.
